Neat, haven't seen em since Jay came back from Ratdog. Cool.

Umphrey's is a good safe call, particularly if they're doing a late night set.

Tea Leaf. Great call, really like Reed & Company..

Del McCoury and Emitt Nershi.. For some inexplicable reason, I like bands that still actually play instruments, and sing rather than push macro buttons on Ableton Live.

All in all, shaping up. Glad to see it won't be a complete Ableton Live sample replay session.

First Round Waka Lineup Announced..

Wherein we learn Bob comes in 2nd to Ableton Live.

Stay tuned for the 2nd round announcements.

Yonder Harvest Fest 2011 - Do NOT miss the Greencards

This is a first. In all the years I've been doing this, we've never promoted a specific show for a band. However, for those of you attending this year's Yonder Mountain Harvest Fest, this is the ONE set you do NOT want to miss.

I first met The Greencards at SxSW a few years ago. Unlike most of the bands I encounter, I actually met them before I got to see them perform. I picked up Viridian off iTMS and listened to it on the way down to the interview. It was excellent. However it didn't even begin to prepare me for their live show.

Comparisons to Union Station are inevitable, not so much in terms of the songwriting and style, but the sheer perfection of their live delivery. Tight doesn't even begin to describe it.

The chops are insanely ludicrous. Beyond bad ass is an almost miserable failure to do them justice.

Here's a band that's toured with Dylan and Willie, been nominated for not one, but two Grammy's. They have a fairly rabid following in what I tend to call the "golf clap bluegrass" set, yet few outside of that arena have ever heard of them. I find this odd, because they can tear it up with the best of em. Kym Warner (mando and a mess of other stringed widgets) is one of the best mando shredders I've ever heard. Carl Miner won the Winfield International Flatpicking championship some years back, and with good reason. He's so good it borders on ridiculous, and is one of the most consistently outstanding guitarists I've ever encountered. This guy just doesn't have a bad night. Ever. Beyond having devastating fiddle chops. Tyler Andal just drips talent. A while back he entered a flatpicking guitar contest at a festival on a whim (he doesn't even play guitar) and won. And then there's Carol Young. She's brilliant on any number of levels. Her voice will totally melt your face and leave you in a puddle on the ground.

Beyond their formidable musical prowess, they're just wonderful folks across the board. Some of my favorite memories of the last few years have been hanging out with them for post show picks in green rooms, hotel lobbies and living rooms.

They played the main stages at Winfield 7 years in a row, which is probably why most of you haven't seen them, because most of you don't even go into the venue any more. I get that, I only went in once this year and that was for Hot Club of Dogtown. Maybe they need to do a set on Stage 5 next year.

As far as the material goes? It's solid. Well written, clever, tight and polished harmonies, and all over the map from slick grooves with killer hooks to ballads that have an uncanny ability to cut right through to your soul. If you're familiar with the Podank's buddies Milk Drive (they hung out at Winfield last year playing the hell out of Coconut Rum with Thomas Trap) then you've heard Kym Warner's writing. He contributed a couple of his songs (I just love Stepping Stones) to Milk Drive's latest album.

That said, I'm always puzzled as to why most of the people I run into aren't familiar with them. Maybe they just haven't got in front of the right crowd yet.

So that's why I'm so incredibly thrilled that they're playing this year's Yonder Harvest Fest.

They're on the Backwood stage, Friday night, from 6:30-7:45. Most of my favorite bands in the last few years have been discoveries on the Backwoods stage at Yonder and Waka. If you haven't seen them live before, maybe it's time you add them to your personal Backwoods stage discovery list.

Links:

Phumes Greencards Interview (earlier lineup)

Live Show Photos - I know, I'm way behind on getting current stuff up for these folks.

Cheers.

Wakarusa 2011

Wakarusa 2011. For the 3rd year in a row, we've made the June trip to Mulberry Mountain for the annual heat survival test known as Wakarusa.

The Good

This year had a great line up, and despite the heat was an awesome time.

I always look forward to Wakarusa, and a big part of that is unlike many other larger festivals, Wakarusa always brings in a great selection of local and regional acts, many of which are every bit as good and often surpass the headliners.

Best new musical finds for 2011: Hoots and Hellmouth and Mountain Standard Time.

We tend to pretty much hang out on the Backwoods stage, and as a result don't catch many of the headliners on the larger stages. Of the bits we did catch, My Morning Jacket put on a killer set, Umphrey's McGee knocked out a great late night set, Grace Potter turned in a decent set, although the stage banter was a bit too contrived for me.

This was the first year we didn't check out any of the food vendors (much to be said for a refrigerator/freezer and stove in an RV) but everyone I talked to said it was all pretty good to really good.

The line getting in was FAR better this year than last year. They're figuring out how to get people on and off the mountain a bit more efficiently which is a very good thing. Last year was a bit of mess.

The Bad

For some inexplicable reason, the "beefed up" security wasn't firing on all cylinders. Various members of the security teams felt it necessary to force people to pour out their water (in 105 degree heat mind you) with the instructions that they'd be able to "refill" inside the venue. The problem was, there WASN'T any place to refill inside some of the venues. It didn't matter if your bottle was sealed or not, if it was liquid, you couldn't bring it in.

I got into a major confrontation with one of these kids who refused to let me bring in a sealed can of soda (being a diabetic in that heat means I have to have very fast acting carbs with me at all times in this sort of heat).

This was ridiculous, and in fact, dangerous. We contacted various members of the Waka staff in an attempt to get the situation rectified, but it still took the better part of almost 2 days before the control obsessed security staff got their collective cranial rectal inversions attended to.

It wasn't just the attendees who were being harassed about the water either. The security staff handling stage load in on the Backwoods stage was pulling the same maneuver on the bands and the stage crews as well, resulting in the above pic.

There were other minor glitches. The onsite RV dump service was markedly less than competent. I paid $40 to have them dump my tanks on the ground for me, as they couldn't figure out how to securely connect to my drain line, not once, but twice. Maybe the heat had gotten to them.

The Ugly.

Wakarusa for the most part has a very laid back crowd. This is one of the reasons it's one of my favorite festivals of the year. Yet, every year there has to be some group of idiots hell bent on spoiling the fun for everyone, and this year was no exception. A group of morons came in with quarter sticks of dynamite and were lighting them off in the porta johns. Over the course of the event, they blew up at least 7 by my count. This was incredibly stupid, and extremely dangerous. Fortunately no one got hurt.

Wakaing Wakarusa..

Various shots from each day..

Walking Around Wakarusa 06/02/11

Walking Around Wakarusa 06/03/11

Walking Around Wakarusa 06/04/11

Walking Around Wakarusa 06/05/11

And finally, here's the entire gallery of everything..

Wakarusa 2011 - Festival Set

Enjoy..

Quixotic 06/02/11 - Wakarusa

Thursday Night, Wakarusa.

Prior to this, I'd never heard of the KC performance troup Quixotic. Sunday night. It's all over but the shouting. To me, Dirtfoot is as much an integral part of Waka and the Mountain as anything. The legendary ChompDown sets, spotting Scott help clean up the fields, Dirtfoot just pretty much IS Wakarusa. So it's fitting that they closed the festival this year on the backwoods stage.

And the set did not disappoint. It was full on Dirtfoot madness in the best way. I couldn't think of a more fitting close to and excellent Wakarusa.

The full gallery is here:

Dirtfoot - 06/05/11, Wakarusa

Enjoy..

Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy - 06/05/11, Wakarusa

Sunday, Wakarusa 2011. They rocked the mountain, big time.

The full gallery is here:

My Morning Jacket - 06/03/2011, Wakarusa

Enjoy..

Hoots and Hellmouth - 06/02/2011, Wakarusa

One of the things I've grown to really love about festies at Mulberry Mountain, is looking for the "great new find"..

It was Mulberry Mountain that led me to Mountain Sprout, and as a result of that, BMB, Tchicken, Whistle Pigs, DMF, Dirtfoot, Carrie Nation and most of my other favorite bands these days.

While this wasn't Hoot's and Hellmouth's first trip to the Mountain, due to schedule conflicts in the past, this was the first time I got to check them out.

Astounding. Seriously, these guys kick major hiney. As a result, Hoots and Hellmouth were one of the two "great new finds" of Wakarusa 2011. So much so, we rearranged our schedule a bit the following day to catch their other set as well.

If you find them in your neck of the woods, it'd be well worth your time to check them out.

The gallery is here:

Hoots and Hellmouth, Thursday Night, Wakarusa 2011

Umphrey's McGee - 06/02/2011, Wakarusa

Thursday night, Wakarusa 2011.

Umphrey's McGee played a great 2 hour set. Day 1 of Wakarusa was hot. We're always looking forward to a Cornmeal set, particularly at Mulberry. Their late set hear last year at Harvest Fest was a total brain melt, and the set the year prior's performance on the Backwoods stage was one of the definitive Cornmeal shows that people still talk about.

Sadly, Cornmeal landed the 9:30-10:30 slot, which isn't ideal for an outfit known for it's insane late night sets. It was also a really short slot, one that isn't conducive to the kind of tranced out jams that's Cornmeal's hallmark. As a result, this one felt a bit like one of their bar sets, as they really didn't have enough time to wind up to their usual festival frenzy.

At any rate, here's the gallery:

Cornmeal - 06/02/11, Wakarusa

Enjoy..

Mountian Sprout 06/04/11 Shots Up.

Wakarusa. The Saturday Late Night slot on the Backwoods stage. It was very much Sprout time on Mulberry Mountain.

Sprout sets have have this tendency to be a high speed descent into pure chaos and reckless abandon, some moreso than others. I remember Adam commenting a while back that "the blessing and the curse of this band is people don't care if we're hammered". While every Sprout set is always a blast and immense fun, there's been some sets that are technically, um.. somewhat less than perfection. Adam's right, in that it usually doesn't matter as the loyal Sprout fans wouldn't even notice if a vocal line wasn't dead nuts on time, because all of us are singing along at the top of our lungs anyways.

Not the case with this set. The guys brought their "A" game. Hell, they brought their "A" game, cubed it, and then squared that for good measure. This was probably the tightest Sprout set I've seen to date. Energy wise, it was right up there with last years epic set from harvest fest.

It was the playing. Blayne's patent pending little interludes he manages to squeeze in were brilliantly executed, and Dan was pulling out stuff that Randy Hill would have given a "Fuckin A" high five to. Adam whipped out a several particularly tasty leads over the course of the evening. The vocals were spot on, despite a pair of serious distractions that were present near the front row which made it somewhat difficult to not crack up for most of the set.

In short, one of the best Sprout sets I've seen, and I've logged a BUNCH of em over the last several years. This was one I was wishing to hell I'd taped.

So..

Here's the gallery:

Mountain Sprout - 06/04/11 - Wakarusa Late Night Set

Enjoy..

Ben Miller Band 06/04/11 Shots up.

Day 3, Wakarusa 2011.

It's ridiculously hot, even in the shade.

It didn't matter though, because The Ben Miller Band fairly tore it up, breaking out some interesting choices of covers by request throughout the set that I hadn't heard them do since Sproutfest a few years ago.

There were definitely some old school BMB fans in the crowd, and they loved it. My fav BMB shows are the ones with Rachel & Smiling Bob from Tyrannosaurus Chicken sitting in, and this was no exception. This was probably my favorite BMB set so far this year.

The gallery is here:

Ben Miller Band - 06/04/11, with Tyrannosaurus Chicken @ Wakarusa

Enjoy..

MilkDrive 06/08/11 Shots Up.

This was my second trip down to The Kessler Theater. The first was for a Killdares show a couple months back. I'd lived in Dallas for years, and had no clue this venue was even there (then again it's way down on the South side).

What an amazing venue. Astoundingly good acoustics (probably one of the best venues in town), a KILLER PA (really nice Midas out front, good mics, bad ass outboard gear) and just a really neat little venue.

This was a pretty bizarre show though, as it was a "Dinner" thing. Apparently 4 times a year they bring in a famous DFW are chef to cook dinner. Sadly, the band is more or less background music, and it was more like more. So much so, the people talking over dinner nearly drowned out an excellent set. They won a few converts in the process though, and the venue owner was seriously impressed (which isn't hard at all with these guys).

The gallery is here:

MilkDrive 06/08/11 - Kessler Theater

Enjoy

MilkDrive 05/14/11 Shots Up

So practically at the last minute, I found out the MilkDrive was playing a local show in Grapevine, at the Main Street Festival. For the most part, I don't pay a lot of attention to the local "civic" type festies, but for a MilkDrive show? I'll brave the horrid traffic and seas of junk food vendors.

Despite a really odd PA configuration, they played a very solid set to a typical civic festival crowd (which means inherently not really into music, particularly not into really brilliantly written and performed music).

Didn't matter, they killed it anyway.

The gallery is here:

MilkDrive - 05/14/11, Grapevine Main Street Festival

Enjoy..

MilkDrive 04/14/11 Shots Up

Old Settler's Fest, 2011. This was my first time to this festival, which I'd sort of avoided in the past due to the ridiculous Texas heat, but as I'm now doing festies in an RV, I'm able to hit ones I'd otherwise have to miss. In this case, I was going to Old Settlers principally to see MilkDrive, and Dirtfoot (who had to cancel due to J having some health issues).

MilkDrive played a killer set on the Campground stage during the day, but the real treat was the impromptu late night set on the unofficial Camp Goodtimes stage.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); I'd never even heard of them. Kym said they were beyond bad ass (high praises coming from one of my favorite mando players in one of my favorite bands).

They were BEYOND bad ass. Holy shit, the chops the chops the chops. I spent the next hour and a half pathetically attempting to get my jaw off the ground. Kym ended up sitting in with them.

While shot in the most horrible light imaginable (fluorescents from hell) with an absolute horrid PA (Peavey SP2's hanging from the ceiling by ropes), it didn't matter. A mostly typical Gracie show, replete with lots of flying hair, killer B3 chops and the patent pending awesome Gracie vocals.

What was different though was the stage banter. "Show us your tits"? Come on Gracie, we're older than that, and you're better than that. It was at Mulberry Mountain Harvest fest a few years ago, on Sunday when everybody was packing up and leaving.

We were breaking camp, and from across the field, here comes Scott, with a walking stick in one hand and a enormous trash bag trailing behind him in the other, as he was picking up whatever trash he found.

This is the essence of Dirtfoot. Besides having a great live show, these guys approach to everything is above and beyond the call of duty. Well known at Mulberry for being the driving force behind Chompdown (a mass cook off where you bring food if you have it, and come eat if you don't), these guys exhibit a spirit that's beyond admirable.

I'd never really had a chance to catch their complete set at any festival due to the inevitable shooting schedule conflicts, so the 3 day run in DFW was a real treat.

This was the first night of the run, at Trees in Dallas, with the typical lame ass Dallas turnout, but they played a killer set, and having Adam from Mountain Sprout and Daniel Coy sit in at the end was huge fun.

So here's the shots:

Dirtfoot - 2/24/11 @ Trees

Enjoy.
